Safety Comparison

The rear seatbelts optional on the Fusion inflate when a collision is detected, helping to spread crash forces over a much larger area of the body and limiting head and neck movement. This can help prevent spinal and internal injuries. The A4 doesn’t offer inflatable seatbelts.

The Fusion (except S) offers optional Active Braking, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The A4 doesn't offer collision warning or crash mitigation brakes.

The Fusion (except S)’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The A4 doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The Fusion (except S) offers optional Reverse Sensing System to help warn the driver about vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles behind or, optionally, in front of the vehicle. The A4 doesn’t offer a front parking aid.

To help make backing safer, the Fusion’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The A4 doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

The Fusion (except S)’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The A4 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

The Fusion has standard SYNC®, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The A4 doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Fusion and the A4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and available blind spot warning systems.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Ford Fusion is safer than the Audi A4:

A significantly tougher test than their original offset frontal crash test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH small overlap frontal offset crash tests. In this test, where only 25% of the total width of the vehicle is struck, results indicate that the Ford Fusion is safer than the A4:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Ford Fusion is safer than the Audi A4:

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Fusion the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 103 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The A4 was not even a “Top Pick” for 2016.

Warranty Comparison

Ford’s powertrain warranty covers the Fusion 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Audi covers the A4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5-years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the A4 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 14 times as many Ford dealers as there are Audi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Fusion’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford 11th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 8 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 14th, below the industry average.

Engine Comparison

The Fusion’s optional 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 25 more horsepower (245 vs. 220) and 17 lbs.-ft. more torque (275 vs. 258) than the A4’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The Fusion Sport’s standard 2.7 turbo V6 produces 105 more horsepower (325 vs. 220) and 92 lbs.-ft. more torque (350 vs. 258) than the A4’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the Fusion FWD 1.5 turbo 4 cyl. gets better highway fuel mileage than the A4 FWD CVT (34 hwy vs. 31 hwy).

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Fusion 1.5 ECOBoost’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The A4 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Fusion uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. engine for maximum performance). The A4 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Fusion AWD’s standard fuel tank has 1.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the A4 (18 vs. 16.1 gallons).

The Fusion has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The A4 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Fusion offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The A4’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Fusion’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The A4 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Fusion’s wheelbase is 1.6 inches longer than on the A4 (112.2 inches vs. 110.6 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Fusion is 1.1 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than on the A4.

The Fusion Sport AWD handles at .89 G’s, while the A4 2.0T Quattro pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Fusion Titanium executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the A4 2.0T Quattro (27.2 seconds @ .64 average G’s vs. 27.6 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

Chassis Comparison

The front grille of the Fusion uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The A4 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Fusion Platinum uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The A4 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space Comparison

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the Fusion is rated a Mid-size car by the EPA, while the A4 is rated a Compact.

The Fusion has 11.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the A4 (102.8 vs. 91).

The Fusion has 1.2 inches more front headroom, 3 inches more front legroom, 2.3 inches more front shoulder room, .3 inches more rear headroom, 3.1 inches more rear legroom and 2.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the A4.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Fusion has a much larger trunk than the A4 with its rear seat up (16 vs. 12.4 cubic feet).

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the Fusion easier. The Fusion’s trunk lift-over height is 24.4 inches, while the A4’s liftover is 26.5 inches.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Fusion offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The A4 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Fusion (except S)’s optional easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The A4 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

If the windows are left down on the Fusion the driver can raise them all using the keyless remote; on a hot day the driver can lower the windows. The driver of the A4 can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Fusion SE/Titanium/Sport/Platinum’s exterior keypad. The A4 doesn’t offer an exterior keypad entry system.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the Fusion (except S) detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The A4 doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Fusion has standard extendable sun visors. The A4 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Fusion (except S/SE) keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The A4 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the Fusion’s optional (except S) heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The A4 doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Fusion (except S) offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The A4 doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Optional SYNC AppLink for the Fusion allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, playing internet radio stations, following twitter accounts and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The A4 doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.

The Fusion (except S) offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The A4 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Fusion (except S)’s optional Active Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The A4 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations Comparison

Consumer Reports® recommends the Ford Fusion, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Audi A4 isn't recommended.
