Safety Comparison

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Expedition 4x4’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The Enclave doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

The Expedition has standard Reverse Sensing System to help warn the driver about vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles behind or, for the Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum in front of the vehicle. The Enclave doesn’t offer a front parking aid.

Both the Expedition and the Enclave have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available all-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The Ford Expedition weighs 640 to 1065 pounds more than the Buick Enclave. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Ford Expedition is safer than the Buick Enclave:

Reliability Comparison

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without their vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports predicts that the Expedition’s reliability will be 21% better than the Enclave.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Expedition third among large suvs in their 2016 Initial Quality Study. The Enclave isn’t in the top three in its category.

Engine Comparison

The Expedition’s 3.5 turbo V6 produces 77 more horsepower (365 vs. 288) and 150 lbs.-ft. more torque (420 vs. 270) than the Enclave’s 3.6 DOHC V6.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

The Expedition has 6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Enclave (28 vs. 22 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Expedition has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Enclave doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Expedition has larger standard tires than the Enclave (275/65R18 vs. 255/60R19). The Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Enclave (285/45R22 vs. 255/60R19).

The Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Enclave’s optional 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Enclave’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Expedition has a standard full size spare tire so your trip isn’t interrupted by a flat. A full size spare isn’t available on the Enclave, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Expedition has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Enclave’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Expedition has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Expedition flat and controlled during cornering. The Enclave’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The Expedition offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Enclave’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Expedition offers an optional automatic rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Enclave doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The Expedition’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (49.9% to 50.1%) than the Enclave’s (55.3% to 44.7%). This gives the Expedition more stable handling and braking.

For better maneuverability, the Expedition’s turning circle is 1.4 feet tighter than the Enclave’s (39 feet vs. 40.4 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Expedition has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Enclave (8 vs. 7.6 inches), allowing the Expedition to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis Comparison

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Expedition Platinum 4x4 is quieter than the Enclave AWD (71 vs. 73 dB).

Passenger Space Comparison

The Expedition has 9.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Enclave (160.3 vs. 151.1).

The Expedition has 1.7 inches more front legroom, 2.1 inches more front hip room, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, .4 inches more rear headroom, 2.3 inches more rear legroom, 2.9 inches more rear hip room, 2.4 inches more rear shoulder room, .5 inches more third row headroom, 4.5 inches more third row legroom and 1.9 inches more third row hip room than the Enclave.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Expedition has a standard third row seat which folds flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Enclave doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Expedition’s optional third row seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Enclave doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The Expedition’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the liftgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Enclave’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Expedition’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Enclave does not have an oil pressure gauge.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Expedition’s exterior PIN entry system. The Enclave doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its OnStar® can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

Intelligent Access standard on the Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum allows you to unlock the driver’s door, cargo door and start the engine all without removing a key from pocket or purse. This eliminates searching for keys before loading groceries, getting in the vehicle in bad weather or making a hurried start to your trip. The Buick Enclave doesn’t offer an advanced key system.

The Expedition XLT’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Enclave’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Expedition has a standard rear variable intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Enclave only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Both the Expedition and the Enclave offer optional heated front seats. The Expedition also offers optional heated second row seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated second row seats aren’t available in the Enclave.

Economic Advantages Comparison

The Expedition will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Expedition will retain 47.11% to 52.31% of its original price after five years, while the Enclave only retains 44.7% to 45.27%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Expedition is less expensive to operate than the Enclave because it costs $108 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Expedition than the Enclave, including $187 less for a water pump, $7 less for an alternator, $108 less for front brake pads, $79 less for a starter, $150 less for fuel injection, $69 less for a fuel pump, $468 less for a timing belt/chain and $1141 less for a power steering pump.

The Car Book by Jack Gillis recommends the Ford Expedition, based on economy, maintenance, safety and complaint levels.

The Ford Expedition/Expedition XL outsold the Buick Enclave by 440 units during the 2016 model year.
