Safety Comparison

For enhanced safety, the front shoulder belts of the Ford Expedition are height-adjustable, and the middle seat shoulder belts have child comfort guides to move the belt to properly fit children. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages children to buckle up. The Dodge Durango doesn’t offer comfort guides on its middle seat belts.

The Expedition has standard Reverse Sensing System to help warn the driver about vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles behind or, for the Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum in front of the vehicle. The Durango doesn’t offer a front parking aid.

Both the Expedition and the Durango have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, available all-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Ford Expedition is safer than the Dodge Durango:

Warranty Comparison

The Expedition’s 5 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the Durango runs out after 60,000 miles.

Reliability Comparison

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the Expedition has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 5.7 V8 in the Durango.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without their vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports predicts that the Expedition’s reliability will be 38% better than the Durango.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Expedition third among large suvs in their 2016 Initial Quality Study. The Durango isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Dodge vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford 11th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 15 more problems per 100 vehicles, Dodge is ranked 21st, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Dodge vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford 31st in reliability. With 4 more problems per 100 vehicles, Dodge is ranked 32nd.

Engine Comparison

The Expedition’s 3.5 turbo V6 produces 70 more horsepower (365 vs. 295) and 160 lbs.-ft. more torque (420 vs. 260) than the Durango’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6. The Expedition’s 3.5 turbo V6 produces 5 more horsepower (365 vs. 360) and 30 lbs.-ft. more torque (420 vs. 390) than the Durango’s optional 5.7 V8.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Expedition uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Durango with the 5.7 V8 engine requires mid-grade for maximum efficiency, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

The Expedition has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the Durango (28 vs. 24.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Expedition has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Durango doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Expedition has larger standard tires than the Durango (275/65R18 vs. 265/60R18). The Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Durango (285/45R22 vs. 265/60R18).

The Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Durango’s optional 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Expedition Limited/King Ranch/Platinum offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Durango’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Ford Expedition’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Dodge Durango only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Expedition has a standard full size spare so your trip isn’t interrupted by a flat. A full size spare costs extra on the Durango Without the option you must depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Expedition has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Expedition flat and controlled during cornering. The Durango’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The Expedition offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Durango’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Expedition is 3.1 inches wider in the front and 3.1 inches wider in the rear than on the Durango.

The Expedition Platinum 4x4 handles at .78 G’s, while the Durango GT pulls only .75 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Expedition offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the Durango can only carry 7.

The Expedition has a standard third row seat which folds flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Durango doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Expedition’s optional third row seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Durango doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The Expedition’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the liftgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Durango’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

Ergonomics Comparison

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Expedition’s exterior PIN entry system. The Durango doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system.

Standard SYNC AppLink for the Expedition allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, tagging songs to buy them later, searching the internet and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The Durango doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.

Bluetooth wireless connectivity is standard on the Expedition, connecting the driver and passenger’s cell phones to the vehicle systems. This allows them to use the vehicle’s stereo and hand controls to place calls safely and easily. Bluetooth costs extra on the Durango.

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the Expedition owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Expedition will cost $325 less than the Durango over a five-year period.
