Safety Comparison

The rear seatbelts optional on the Edge inflate when a collision is detected, helping to spread crash forces over a much larger area of the body and limiting head and neck movement. This can help prevent spinal and internal injuries. The Outlander doesn’t offer inflatable seatbelts.

The Edge Titanium/Sport offers an optional 180-degree camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Outlander only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Compared to metal, the Edge’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Mitsubishi Outlander has a metal gas tank.

The Edge offers optional 911 Assist, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Outlander doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Edge and the Outlander have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all-wheel drive, collision warning systems, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty Comparison

The Edge’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Outlander’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are almost 11 times as many Ford dealers as there are Mitsubishi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Edge’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Mitsubishi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford 11th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 14 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mitsubishi is ranked 20th, below the industry average.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Edge SE 2.0 ECOBoost FWD offers an optional system to automatically turn off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The Outlander doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Edge FWD’s standard fuel tank has 1.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Outlander (18.3 vs. 16.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Edge AWD’s standard fuel tank has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Outlander (19.2 vs. 16.6 gallons).

The Edge has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Outlander doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

The Edge’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Outlander are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Edge has larger standard tires than the Outlander (245/60R18 vs. 225/55R18). The Edge Sport’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Outlander (265/40R21 vs. 225/55R18).

The Edge Sport’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Outlander’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Edge Sport offers optional 21-inch wheels. The Outlander’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Edge has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Outlander’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Edge has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Outlander doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

The Edge’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Outlander doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Edge’s wheelbase is 7.1 inches longer than on the Outlander (112.2 inches vs. 105.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Edge is 4.2 inches wider in the front and 4.1 inches wider in the rear than on the Outlander.

The Edge Sport AWD handles at .87 G’s, while the Outlander SEL S-AWC pulls only .77 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Edge Sport AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure-Eight” maneuver 2.6 seconds quicker than the Outlander SEL S-AWC (26.2 seconds @ .72 average G’s vs. 28.8 seconds @ .56 average G’s).

Chassis Comparison

The front grille of the Edge uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Outlander doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Edge Sport uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Outlander doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Edge has 1.7 inches more front legroom, 3.3 inches more front hip room, 3.7 inches more front shoulder room, 1.9 inches more rear headroom, 3.3 inches more rear legroom, 5.8 inches more rear hip room and 4.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the Outlander.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Edge has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat up than the Outlander with its rear seat up (39.2 vs. 10.3 cubic feet). The Edge has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat folded than the Outlander with its rear seat folded (73.4 vs. 63.3 cubic feet).

Pressing a switch automatically lowers the Edge SEL/Titanium/Sport’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Outlander doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Edge. The Outlander doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Edge’s available cargo door can be opened just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Outlander doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its cargo door, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics Comparison

When three different drivers share the Edge Titanium/Sport, the memory system makes it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster) and outside mirror angle. The Outlander doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Edge Titanium/Sport’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Outlander doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The power windows standard on both the Edge and the Outlander have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Edge is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Outlander prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Edge’s front power windows open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Outlander’s passenger windows don’t open or close automatically.

On a hot day the Edge’s driver can lower the front windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Outlander can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Edge SEL/Titanium/Sport’s exterior keypad. The Outlander doesn’t offer an exterior keypad entry system.

The Outlander’s power locks don’t automatically lock the doors. The Edge’s standard power locks automatically lock the door when a certain speed is reached. This is an important feature for occupant safety. Locked doors are proven to open less often in collisions, and they are also effective in preventing crime at traffic lights. (The power lock’s automatic feature may have to be activated by your dealer.)

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Edge has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Outlander only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The Edge has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The Outlander has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the SEL/GT.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Edge has standard extendable sun visors. The Outlander doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Edge SEL/Titanium/Sport offers optional automatic dimming rear and side view mirrors which automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Outlander offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Both the Edge and the Outlander offer available heated front seats. The Edge Titanium/Sport also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated second row seats aren’t available in the Outlander.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Edge Titanium/Sport keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Outlander doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

Both the Edge and the Outlander offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Edge has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Outlander doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

The Edge SEL/Titanium/Sport offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Outlander doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Edge Sport’s optional Active Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Outlander doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Economic Advantages Comparison

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Edge is less expensive to operate than the Outlander because it costs $225 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Edge than the Outlander, including $3 less for front brake pads, $74 less for fuel injection and $303 less for a fuel pump.

Recommendations Comparison

The Car Book by Jack Gillis recommends the Ford Edge, based on economy, maintenance, safety and complaint levels.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Edge second among midsize suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Outlander isn’t in the top three.

The Ford Edge outsold the Mitsubishi Outlander by over five to one during the 2016 model year.
