Safety Comparison

The Escape (except S) offers optional parking sensors to help warn the driver about vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles behind or, optionally, in front of the vehicle. The Sorento doesn’t offer a front parking aid.

To help make backing safer, the Escape Titanium’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Sorento doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

The Escape offers optional SYNC ®, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Sorento doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Escape and the Sorento have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Ford Escape is safer than the Kia Sorento:

Warranty Comparison

The Escape’s 5 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the Sorento runs out after 100,000 miles.

There are over 6 times as many Ford dealers as there are Kia dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Escape’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2013 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Kia vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford 13th in reliability. With 13 more problems per 100 vehicles, Kia is ranked 21st.

Engine Comparison

The Escape’s optional 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 18 lbs.-ft. more torque (270 vs. 252) than the Sorento’s optional 3.3 DOHC V6.

The Escape has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Sorento doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system or a tether to prevent losing the cap.

In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The Escape has a standard brake assist system to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The Sorento doesn’t offer a brake assist feature.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

The Escape’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Sorento LX’s standard 65 series tires. The Escape Titanium’s tires have a lower 45 series profile than the Sorento SX/Limited’s 55 series tires.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Escape has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Sorento’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Escape’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Sorento doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The Escape Titanium AWD handles at .81 G’s, while the Sorento SX AWD pulls only .75 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Escape Titanium AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.6 seconds quicker than the Sorento LX AWD (27.3 seconds @ .6 average G’s vs. 28.9 seconds @ .55 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Escape has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Sorento (7.9 vs. 7.3 inches), allowing the Escape to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis Comparison

The Ford Escape may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 350 to 1000 pounds less than the Kia Sorento.

The Escape is 6.3 inches shorter than the Sorento LX/EX, making the Escape easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Escape (except 2.0L ECOBoost) uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Sorento doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Escape has .7 inches more front headroom and 1.8 inches more front legroom than the Sorento.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Escape has a much larger cargo area than the Sorento with its rear seat up (34.3 vs. 9.1 cubic feet).

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Escape Titanium’s liftgate can be opened just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Sorento doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Escape offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Sorento doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The power windows standard on both the Escape and the Sorento have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Escape is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Sorento prevents the driver from operating the rear windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Escape Titanium’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Sorento’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Escape SE/Titanium’s exterior keypad. The Sorento doesn’t offer an exterior keypad entry system.

The Escape’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Sorento’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The Escape Titanium’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.

The Escape Titanium’s optional Active Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Sorento doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the Escape owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Escape will cost $625 less than the Sorento over a five-year period.

The Escape will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The Intellichoice estimates that the Escape will retain 48.31% to 49.66% of its original price after five years, while the Sorento only retains 42.77% to 43.65%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Escape is less expensive to operate than the Sorento because it costs $162 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Escape than the Sorento, including $176 less for a water pump, $258 less for an alternator, $164 less for fuel injection, $37 less for a fuel pump, $28 less for front struts and $777 less for a timing belt/chain.

Intellichoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Ford Escape will be $2031 to $2607 less than for the Kia Sorento.
